Who built the Selarón Staircase?

Jorge Selarón, a Chilean artist born in 1947, embarked on a remarkable journey that would eventually lead him to Rio de Janeiro in 1983. Falling in love with the city, Selarón decided to make it his home, settling in a charming neighborhood that connects Lapa and Santa Teresa. Inspired by his deep affection for Rio, he embarked on an extraordinary project to honor the city that had embraced him so warmly. In 1990, Selarón started renovating the dilapidated steps that extended in front of his house, and for the next 23 years, he dedicated himself to creating an open-air mosaic in this public space. With his artistic talents as a painter and ceramic artist, Selarón transformed the staircase into a breathtaking work of art.
